Pogo on a Trampoline

Six dollars and thirty-four cents (Odd Musings)

Lately, whenever I go shopping at the grocery store, or go to a restaurant, or make any type of purchase whatsoever, I look for a deal. I'm still not all that good at doing stuff like clipping out coupons, or sending in refunds, but I've figured out how to save a few dollars here and there and it is starting to add up.

Yesterday, geena and I decided to go eat at a little buffet place that is within walking distance to our place (but we still drove). Before we went, I went searching through the cupboards to find a coupon. I finally found it in our pencil/scissor/tape dispenser drawer, hidden under some miscellanegi, but it was expired. Don't worry, though, an expired coupon isn't enough to stop dave from saving two dollars! I sat down at geena's laptop, typed in "Fresh Choice Coupon" at google.com, and there were some 100% legit coupons. I wirelessly sent the coupons to our upstairs printer, cut one out, and we were on our way. Savings: ~$2.00 .

Later in the day, we went to Albertson's to buy another week or so of groceries. The grocery store is a great place to save money, especially when you have one of those super saving cards. I zipped up and down the aisles searching for great deals. Buy one dozen of croissants, get another dozen for free? Grab those up! You mean I can save 1.8 cents per roll if I buy the 12-pack of toilet paper? Sign me up!

As we walked out of Albertson's, I proudly read over the receipt and told geena that with our Super Saving's Card, we'd just saved over $34! She was quite impressed, and I was quite happy with my decision to purchase two more large pails of kitty litter for buy one get one free (now we have enough kitty litter to last 4-6 months). But then geena told me the bad news, the receipt said that we paid full price for the kitty litter! Now I had a problem, because that stuff is expensive, and I wouldn't have bought it if I wasn't going to get Super Savings.

I talked it over with geena and I decided it was worth the hassle of going back into the store to get my money. Geena continued putting the groceries in the car, and I went back into Albertson's to harass a bored looking bag boy. I didn't see any type of help desk or anything like that, so I just went and asked the bag boy what I should do. He scanned the receipt, looking for an error I might have made, but he couldn't find any. Then he and I walked back to the kitty litter display case and found a little sign that clearly said that the litter was buy one get one free. He was quite satisfied that something had clearly gone wrong, so we walked back to the front of the store and he gave me a refund for $6.34. At that point, I could have pushed the issue further, because they actually charged me $6.39, plus tax, but I wanted to high tail it out of there before geena started to get antsy.

I'd like to end this story by saying that we did something interesting with all the money we saved (like donate it, hire a hitman, or buy lottery tickets), but this is the end. Adding this sentence so the paragraph does not just have one (sentence).

that is how I raised 4 boys without working fulltime. Today Dad was suppose to buy Juicy Juice 64 oz for $2 but brought home 46 oz that cost $3.04. He also left a bag at the store so I had good reason to send him back to return the juice. He did bring back the right one with a refund too.

Oh and also some stores give you one free if it rings up wrong.

That's fantastic! Horray for thriftiness! On another note, there is a part of me that is really suspicious about who is monitoring my purchases through those store cards. I don't want to be target marketed as the "Skim milk, fresh spinach, chesse and Edy's but only when it's on sale" customer.

So you can imagine my delight when I found someone else's grocery saver card on the street. :)

There are tons of bad things about those "loyalty cards". I really hated signing up for it (or did someone with a similar name and slightly different address sign up for it ;-)), but there just aren't enough convenient grocery stores around here.
